5 Practical Tips for Self-Development
Los Angeles Christian Counseling
Anytime is a good time for self-development. People tend to focus on improving themselves in the new year but anytime is good for a fresh start. These five tips can help you improve your focus, outlook, and personal skills. They are all highly practical and don’t take much time to implement, but they make a big difference. May they inspire you to make healthy changes in your day-to-day routines.
5 Tips for Self-Development
Tip 1: Be Mindful
One of the biggest blockades to personal development in today’s world is a fast-paced lifestyle. High-achieving people have lots of responsibilities to juggle, and it’s easy to get caught up in projects and meetings. If you spend your day totally on the go, barely stopping to catch your breath, you can greatly benefit from being mindful.
To become more mindful, all you need to do is slow down and pay attention to your five senses. Try it while you are doing your daily Bible reading to enhance your experience. Take a moment to register what you are seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. Savor each sensation and thank God for your body’s ability to enjoy and appreciate God’s creation.
Mindfulness is an especially effective practice while you are eating. People who are mindful of meals tend to eat less and feel more satisfied. You can take small bites, putting your fork down between each one, and study the feelings you’re experiencing. Mindfulness can involve reflecting on past experiences linked to the current one, which can be enriching.
As you become more mindful, you’ll feel a greater sense of God’s peace throughout your day. Decide which time of day is best for mindfulness exercises and do them every day for a week. You feel more alive and awake as you become more mindful.
Tip 2: Keep a Journal
Journaling is one of the habits that top performers use to learn and grow, and it’s easy to do. When you journal regularly, you have a virtually cost-free outlet for negative emotions and a safe place to record dreams and ideas. Writing things down helps your brain process them better than only thinking about them, so that’s why journaling is an excellent tool for personal growth.
You don’t need to block out 30 minutes a day to journal. A few lines are sufficient for personal benefits. You could keep a one-line-a-day journal, which allows you a small space to record your thoughts and reflect on them from month-to-month or year-to-year.Another short, easy-to-manage journal is a gratitude journal. You could use a simple notebook to record a few reasons you are thankful each day. Gratitude journals are proven to boost your outlook, especially if you are going through a hard time. The Bible tells us to thank God in all things, and a gratitude journal can help you do just that.
Consider keeping a journal for personal goals. You are more likely to meet personal goals when you write them down. You can review the goals each week and write about more ways to meet them. If you keep a journal like this one, it’s important to show yourself grace if you fail to meet a goal. Simply move it to the next week and start over. Your journal can be one of your best accountability partners and motivational tools.
Tip 3: Eradicate Negative Self-Talk
Many of us struggle with talking down to ourselves. Perhaps you have a self-critical personality, grew up facing criticism from others, or both. One of the best things you can do to develop yourself is to eradicate negative self-talk and replace it with the truth of God’s Word.
This is an area where mindfulness comes back into play. Start becoming mindful of the way you are talking to yourself. Would you talk that way to anyone else? The Bible says we need to love others as we love ourselves, meaning that we can’t live the best life God wants for us until we treat ourselves right. By eradicating the negative messages, you’ll benefit yourself as well as those around you. When you have a negative thought about yourself, replace it with the truth of God’s Word. Turn your favorite verse into a Scripture-based affirmation you can tell yourself when you are triggered by negativity. For example, if you tend to say, “I can’t do this,” you can use Phil. 4:13 as an affirmation: “God will give me what I need to do this because I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.”
Many Bible verses will work as affirmations for your negative self-talk patterns. Spend time going through a concordance, searching with a keyword, so you can find a verse that addresses your need. This verse will help you overcome nagging negative thoughts.
Tip 4: Enjoy Nature
Did you know that if you spend 120 minutes per week in nature, you receive many health benefits? People who engage with nature are happier and healthier. You can gain personal benefits from getting outside, no matter what time of year.
One of the best activities you can do outside is prayer walking. A prayer walk combines physical activity with spiritual activity, so you get more than one benefit at a time. Exposure to the sun increases your Vitamin D level, which is essential for good health. A brisk 15-minute walk once or twice per day can help your immune system fight off infections, plus give your heart and lungs a workout.
Time in nature connects us with God’s creation. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty, creative abilities, power, and majesty. Practicing mindfulness outdoors will help you take notice of beauty you may have overlooked before. Even if it’s cold outside, bundle up and get outside. Your brain and body will thank you!
Tip 5: Practice Self-Care
Contrary to what many Christians secretly think, self-care isn’t selfish. You need to prioritize your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being so you can serve people best. It’s important to work in time for self-care every day so you will avoid burnout, sickness, and discouragement.
Which activities do you enjoy doing just for fun or relaxation? Which activities make you feel pampered? Make a list of these activities and engage in at least one of them per day.
Daily self-care doesn’t need to be expensive. You can enjoy a good book, a funny TV show, or a bubble bath every night before bed. A weekly time of pursuing your hobby is another good option. Simple activities like these are great ways to take better care of yourself.
Then once per month or quarter, treat yourself to something a little bigger, like your favorite spa treatment. Regular self-care activities give you something to look forward to, which can offset your stress. They can be a reward that replenishes you. You’ll be refreshed and better prepared to engage with others when you are caring for yourself well.
