Does God Care About Mental Health?

CoachingIndividual CounselingPersonal Development

While it may seem like a mainstream secular concept, the Bible has a great deal of support for supporting mental health and wellness. God created us as whole beings. The physical, spiritual, and mental all work together to make up a whole person. This is part of God’s design.

As His creation, it is no surprise that the Bible has wisdom for us. God wants us to function in health and wholeness in every area of our lives.

What is mental health?

While you may not find the term mental health in the Bible, you will find plenty of scriptures that support the concept. It is important to understand what mental health is.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. – MentalHealth.gov

This shows us that it is all about the innermost workings of who we are. It has to do with feelings, actions, and thoughts. Advice and wisdom on these things are evident throughout Scripture.

Examples of what the Bible says about mental health

Does God Care About Mental Health? 1

The Bible is full of important advice, support, and wisdom about our mental health and wellness. While the Word is the story of God, He uses it to teach and guide us in our lives. This is through the lived stories of generations of people including Jesus.

The Bible shows us that the state of our hearts is important. It isn’t just a fad. Since the Old Testament, God has revealed that He cares about our hearts and how we feel.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Proverbs 4:23, NIV

The state of our hearts matters to God. In Proverbs, we learn that everything we do in our lives comes from the state of our hearts. That is why it is important to care for it.

Similarly, we learn about the importance of both the mind and the soul, all of which make up and support our mental health.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:2, NIV

God cares about our minds. A healthy mind, fully transformed by faith is how we understand God’s will for our lives.

He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. – Psalm 23:3, NIV

Just as God transforms our minds to align with His will and heart, He refreshes our souls. This refreshment guides us to walk in His ways, understand His heart, and live our lives loved. It is from this that we can experience true wellness.

Help from God

The Bible certainly offers evidence that our mental health is important to God. It is in the Word that we find so much of what we need. But God does not stop there. He provides help through so many things, including people.
